The 12th Man

not counting grandma b - who is still pitching in round here with some east coast love - there are five people living in my house right now.

however, and i'm not the only one who'd tell you this - we are not yet a family of five. we're more like a family of four, clicking on all cylinders, who just got one of those little japanese pocket pets that were all the rage a few hundred years ago. you know, the ones where every so often it beeps and you have to press a button or it goes apeshit and becomes useless.

yeah, we've got a 7 pound one of those and he's sawing logs right now in mrs b's arms.

yes, he's adorable and he's sweet and he does what we need him to do and we do what he needs us to do, but let's face facts here. until my man can focus his 17 day old eyes on an object other than the phantom bottle he thinks is coming every time he's roused from his nap, bb is going to be auditioning for his spot on the roster.

to those of you who think i sound like a prick, i say...whatever. you know i'm right. you do. and you're not any less of a human being for secretly agreeing with me.

more importantly, you know the truth is that i'm in love with the kid. you know i stand above him as he dozes and stare at him until i well up. you know i can't wait to pick his little ass up out of his crib as soon as i get home from work, or change his little gulden's mustard colored poop diapers and hand them off to his brothers to bring to the garbage as they sniff them and make comic retching noises in some sort of demented 5 year old attempt at bonding/theater. i'm totally smitten. we all are.

bottom line, though, everyone knows a two week old baby wins their real points when they're sleeping.

As cute as they are for those first few months, I was relieved when my kids got out of what I refer to as the 'gaping maw of need' stage. I adored them, I loved holding them while they were sleeping and it was cute to watch them try to figure out what the hell those shapeless blobs (i.e. me & the man) were doing up there, but yeah, they weren't really part of the team at first.

So I know where you are coming from.

Actually this was the age that sparked one of the funniest conversations I have ever heard. As The Boy was moving his mouth around in the air looking for what we referred to as a 'phantom boob', The Man and my friend D had an extended conversation about how good it would be to just have to move your mouth around like that and someone would come along and put a nipple in your mouth. That led to a discussion of the relative size of the boob that would be involved, etc etc....well, *I* found it funny anyway. Perhaps I just needed to get out more or at least get more sleep. :P

Cute kid you've got there.

Emma who will 1 in a little over a week is still auditioning for her spot with the Dough kids. She needs to do more sleeping and less screaming before we decide if she'll go to they Gypsies or not.

And seriously - 17 day old babies are never that cute. bb is absolutely adorable.

Right there with you. Our 10 day-old daughter is home with us (the boy is still in the NICU) and she is the picture of cuteness, but is currently just the understudy for the role of daughter (even though we don't have any other daughters)in the How AboutTwo? household.

It's so much nicer when they can feed themselves. Heck, I'm still waiting for when LA Toddler can feed me...

But I do miss the sleeping baby days. Maybe soon... who knows?
