The Calling

in the new issue of the new yorker, sy hersh...

"Bush’s closest advisers have long been aware of the religious nature of his policy commitments. In recent interviews, one former senior official, who served in Bush’s first term, spoke extensively about the connection between the President’s religious faith and his view of the war in Iraq. After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the former official said, he was told that Bush felt that “God put me here” to deal with the war on terror. The President’s belief was fortified by the Republican sweep in the 2002 congressional elections; Bush saw the victory as a purposeful message from God that “he’s the man,” the former official said. Publicly, Bush depicted his reĆ«lection as a referendum on the war; privately, he spoke of it as another manifestation of divine purpose."

i knew the president and i were more alike than i had originally suspected.
he was chosen by the lord to lead this nation in a time of uncertainty and upheaval.
i was chosen by the lord to post pictures of animals screwing on my blog in a time of uncertainty and upheaval.

Even The Smell of the Subway

let me wallow in a bit of self-pity/therapeutic writing for a moment, won't you?

i'm just in a crappy mood tonight. for a couple of reasons.

first off, mrs. b is leaving on the red eye to rochester in a couple of hours. her sister is giving birth to our first niece tomorrow and she is flying in for the occasion. i couldn't be happier about the news, but it's always a drag sending her off cross country on a plane. and sleeping alone sucks. and so does a 10 pm drive back to the burbs from lax when you've got a 450 am appointment with an alarm clock.

(the good news is that my folks coincidentally happen to be in town so they're helping out with the boys big time.)

tack on the fact that out of nowhere today i got a completely sick melancholy homesickness for new york, and you've got one unpleasant mb on your hands this evening.

for some reason, today felt like the kind of day where, if i still lived in new york, i would have needed to wander solo around the city for a few hours, maybe get lunch by myself at the bar of union square cafe and then go and just enjoy some cold air in my nostrils for a while. that's the kind of solitary gotham therapy i really miss. there's nothing at all that i've found in la that can come close. yet.

don't me wrong...i have found decompression potential in sunny drives through malibu canyon or along pch, but when you find yourself getting nostalgic for the place you refuse to refer to as "home" anymore - because of what you're trying to accomplish in the city where they mail the bill for the mortgage now - as you're looking at the beauty shots that you see on the apprentice or the king kong trailer, you know the time has come for a new york fix.

if you're in new york when you're reading this...heed my self-important words and don't take it for granted. especially if you've ever seen ventura boulevard up close.

Newish

in my never ending attempt to try to keep things interesting, i think i have finally realized how to put video up on this godforsaken blog. late to the party again.
let's see if this works.
i made this video back in may of 2004 when my children were young and cute.

Wisdom

besides the fact that i had to go into work on thursday and friday and then spent the rest of the weekend eating like i was going to the chair, it's been kind of quiet over here. time to lean, once again, on a random story from my past to meet my goal of a daily post.

------

i was working for a friend in high school, videotaping weddings on the weekend. on this particular day, we were documenting a very low rent affair in the basement of some bar in freeport, long island. the wedding feast consisted of a two-table buffet - steam tables with manicotti, lasagna, sausage & peppers...that sort of thing.

there was also a big, green salad from which wafted a terribly strong red onion smell and an oversized bowl full of semolina rolls, next to which sat a smaller bowl full of individually wrapped butter pats.

after a sweeping pan of the smorgasboard, i focused my lens on an older gentleman as he staggered up to the table. he was a small man in an oversized grey suit with a snappy fedora placed neatly on top of his bald head. in the right light, you'd swear he was related to the little guy that benny hill used to slap around.

anyhow, this man makes his way down the line ready to enjoy his meal. he takes a little of this, samples a little of that...until he reaches the bowl full of butter. it is at that point when he pauses for a second, reaches into the bowl and helps himself. once he's got his butter, he holds it up, examines it for another second, slowly and deliberately unwraps it, and then pops it into his mouth. he chews it with great regard and swallows it with a labored gulp.

after a moment, he turns to the woman who is standing behind him in line and says,

"that ain't chocolate. it's some sort of cheese."

And I Don't Want To Forget Nick and Jess, Either

today, i'd like to take a serious moment to give thanks to the people who make my life worth living.
my family.
their health and happiness means more to me than anything i could ever express on this retarded little blog.
oh, and the guy who ended up here at, like, 1 in the morning today searching for "black juggs"...you're a close second, pal.

But I Am Still A Big 98 Degrees Fan

nick and jessica are fucking up my thanksgiving.

i guess it could be worse.

i could be going through a humiliating public divorce reported on by people angry about having their holidays off cancelled because my publicists decided not to announce the news until they were reasonably sure no one would be able to adequately cover it.

that would probably be a bummer.

i swear, with god as my witness, when this is all over, i'm never going to listen to my jessica cds anymore.

Still Bitter After All These Years

because of what i do for a living, i have been asked more times than i can count...

"which celebrity have you met over the years that was just a dick?"

the funny thing is, out of the all the people i've ever seen or interviewed on a shoot, there really are only a few that have left me thinking less of them after it was all over.

we've gone over what i think about dan aykroyd, thanks to the little temper tantrum i saw him throw - and someday i'll tell you all about the time arnold schwarzenegger gave himself a nice chuckle making fun of my height - but when all is said and done, there really is only one star that stands head and shoulders above everyone else when it comes to pure dickitude.

bob hope.

yes, beloved entertainer and american icon bob hope was the biggest douchebag of them all. and the funny thing is, i was only about 14 years old when i learned this for myself.

i was up in providence, rhode island for the weekend because my parents had to go to a wedding or surprise party or something like that and they didn't want to leave my brother and me home alone on long island. little did we realize it when we checked in, but that particular weekend also happened to be the weekend that the fine city of providence was celebrating its 350th anniversary with a huge blowout, and all the stars they had hired for the occasion were staying at our hotel. there was chuck berry - sitting grumpily in the lobby stinking of cigarettes...there were the lionel richie-less commodores - traveling loudly in packs of 3...and, rumor had it, bob 'i'm going to turn out to be an asshole' hope was due on the premises at any moment.

turns out that moment happened to be the same moment my brother and i were getting into the elevator to go up to our room after some quality time in the game room.

as the door closed, we heard a loud voice yell out to us, "hold that elevator. hold it right now!"

i hit the door open button, and as the door slid back open, standing there before us were three or four security looking goons and bob hope himself.

"out of the elevator, kids," one of the goons commanded, "this is bob hope's elevator."

we just stood there stunned, not moving, more amazed than anything else that there in the flesh was the pink, wrinkly legend himself - standing close enough for us to see the hair tufting from his ears - and his people were rudely commanding us to give up our elevator so he could ride in comfort.

"hey, i don't think you heard me," the goon continued, "o.u.t.! this is bob hope's elevator."

we weren't sure what to do. my brother and i both knew that we should probably give up the elevator out of respect, but we also knew that the way this guy was handling things was kind of ridiculous.

i instinctively looked into bob hope's eyes, silently wishing that he would put an end to what was going on, wishing that we could all share the elevator together and i would have a nice memory of my brief time spent with an american legend.

it was then bob hope realized i was looking at him. it was then bob hope opened his mouth to speak.

"come on, boys," said bob hope to my brother and me, "you heard the man. haven't got all day, you know."

my brother and i stepped out of the elevator. bob hope and his goons stepped in. the doors closed and up he went to his room, bringing whatever respect i might have ever had for him up to his room along with him.

and after all these years, not even paul reiser snapping at the producer i was PAing for backstage at saturday night live for no reason can hold a candle to that kind of display.

i hope the worms hurt, hope. i hope they hurt real bad.

Fun Wif Fotos. (It Just Keeps Getting Lamer, Folks)

since i'm a little writer's blocked up - and busy with my folks coming in from out of town - i am once again leaning on a lame, photo-based game to make my goal of a daily post. that said, let's play...

"can you guess?"

which of these photographs of exxonmobil ceo and chairman lee raymond is the original - and which one has been 'prettied up' (if that's at all possible)?

Ask Nicely And I'll Share The Secret

i was doing a little thinking as i made myself dinner tonight - and i have to get this off my chest.

it may sound like i'm bragging...but there isn't a soul alive who can make a tuna-melt like The Kid.

See You At The Xmas Party, Doc...

if there's anything more uncomfortable than having a nice long 3 am discussion with the attending in the local ER all about exactly where the pain in your wiener is coming from...

...and then finding out that he's married to the woman in charge of human resources where you work...i haven't felt it in a long time.

------

thankfully, that was the worst thing that happened last night. just a false alarm. i was in the ER at 1 am, back in my bed by 4.

Paging Art Linkletter, Part IV

stopped by the newsstand on the way home from dinner for a magazine or two. we pull right up to the curb, where the cashier guy sits. mrs b jumps out of the car while i stay behind with the boys.

a perfect time to try to embarrass my wife.

i roll down the window. "mrs b!" i call out, "don't forget my copy of 'juggs'!"

mrs b gives me the 'don't be a schmuck' face and continues her search non-plussed.

until...

a second passes and the backseat chorus chimes in as loudly as they can, through the open rear window for everyone to hear.

"mommy! where is juggs? get juggs for daddy! daddy wants juggs!"

(you know...thinking about it now, i should have asked for 'black inches'. would have been a bigger laugh. at least to me.)

The Easy Way Out

you'd imagine when you're home from work, riding out the intermittent pain of kidney stones, waiting for your dr's appointment in the late afternoon, and enduring the titanic sounds of construction coming from the other side of the house, that you'd have plenty of time to think of interesting/funny things to type up.

not so much.

all i've thought of today is what the next week will probably bring in terms of invasive urological instruments.

so in an effort to kill two birds with one stone - ie: post here and take my mind off my internal organs - i decided to clean out my cellphone camera and present the most interesting stuff.

so, without further adieu...

picture 1 needs no explanation...the boys in the rain from very early this spring.

picture 2 is from one of the cooler moments i had this past year. producing an interview with jamie foxx about 25 minutes after he won his oscar.

the interesting thing about picture 3 is not the innocent moon-face of american idol castoff william hung that i captured as we boarded our las vegas to burbank flight on southwest last year...it's the woman in the lower right hand side of the picture.

that lady is mama hung. she is one tough bitch and she has the armpit hair to prove it. as you would imagine, will was quite a hit in the airport and every few minutes a different rube (like me, i guess) would summon up the courage to talk to him for a moment and maybe get a photo they could show off to their friends. that was fine. but as soon as william sat down on the airport floor with his bag of burger king to eat an early lunch, mama hung went into super protective mode. as soon as someone would slink up hoping for a bit of hung love, she swung into action. "you leave william alone! william eat his lunch! no talk to william now!"

once we had all boarded the plane, mother hung decided that she would rather sit in the seat that william had been assigned and loudly shouted to/at him in chinese until he got up and they switched. he sat with his ipod headphones on the whole time with his eyes closed and a clenched-lipped grin enjoying the life of a superstar.

and finally, picture 4 - which needs no explanation.

unaltered and untouched. an mb moment in time captured. the camera never lies.

with a grill like that, is it any wonder i've got stones?

Turns Out You Can't Live A Life Of Unlimited Cheese Eating. You WILL Have To Pay The Piper Someday.

boy, have these posts taken a turn.

not so long ago, it was lame attempts at comedy, or lame political observations, or unpleasant stories about my children's toilet time.

now, it's mb's kidney stones 24/7.

i regret to say that the worst is not over. it turns out i have a nugget lodged up there somewhere. and by 'somewhere', i mean 'somewhere it's not likely to extricate itself'.

looks like they are going to have to go and get it.

the hard way.

and i don't mean surgery. no, that would be the easy way into my body.

things are about to get interesting.

Just Doing My Part

as i got off the CT scan table tonight at the imaging center where i was following up on my stone, the tech was smiling ear to ear.

O Captain, My Captain

i don't know why i keep going back to what i did in elementary school when i'm hurting for a post, but the more i think about it, the more i realize just influential those days were in shaping who the modern day moe berg is.

for instance, the reason i do what it is i do these days can probably be traced back to this man...

captain frank reed - heavy hitter on the murderer's row disc jockey lineup put together by the mighty 66 WNBC radio back in the 1980s.

captain frank was the first celebrity i ever interviewed.

it was fourth grade and i had taken it upon myself to sign my class up to guest edit "kidsday", the weekly color children's section in my local paper. i did this by filling out a coupon and sending it in, not allowing myself to believe for a second that they wouldn't choose us to participate.

they didn't choose us to participate.

but that didn't stop me. i figured it was just a matter of time until we got the call, and when we got the call, we would have to be prepared. that meant having a celebrity interview ready to go.

part of the allure of kidsday - at least to this fourth grader - was the opportunity for kids like me to fire questions at an honest to goodness rock star or actor or new york islander or something like that. every week four lucky kids from the lucky class would be put in a room with, i don't know, pat benatar or boy george or mike bossy

and they would walk away a little wiser and clutching an autographed picture.

i knew we would need a hell of an interview when the word eventually came down that it was our time. what i didn't know was that newsday set up those interviews for the kids.

if i my class was going to shine, i was going to have to land that interview.

first, i narrowed my choices down to two potential interviewees

don imus

who was at that time mr. big shit on the radio - which to me was a huge deal..

(quick backstory: for some reason, at that point in my life, i was obsessed with WNBC. as in OBSESSED. i listened to WNBC every chance i could. i wrote fan letters to the whole on-air staff - even roz frank, the woman who did traffic.

i sat down in front of my tape recorder for hours upon hours recording my own radio shows. i even wrote "listen to 66 WNBC" on a huge piece of oaktag, glued pictures of the jocks all around the edges and stood on the service road to the long island expressway shouting at cars to tune their radio to 660 am. luckily, this phase didn't last that long.)

and the rolling stones

who were riding high on the success of tattoo you.

i figured the stones would be eager to talk about the new record, so i tried them first. i looked up their record company on the back of my LP, got the phone number from information, dialed it and announced that i was a student whose class was going to be in kidsday soon and needed to interview the stones as soon as possible.

whoever took my call was polite and gently explained that the stones were very very busy but thanked me for calling.

not deterred in the least, i dialed WNBC - which was no problem because i already knew the number by heart. i also knew from experience that if you called up and just asked for a disc jockey's office, most times they would just put you right through, a trick i used whenever i wanted to request 'i love a rainy night' by eddie rabbitt. this being the case, i had my answer from whoever answered imus' phone that day almost immediately.

no. imus doesn't do interviews.

0 for 2.

i was panicked.

then it dawned on me. ask the captain.

the way i saw it, the captain wasn't so famous that he would be too busy to talk to me and he had enough connection to imus (he would narrate the i-man's notorious moby worm segments a la orson welles in 'war of the worlds') to make it interesting to readers.

the switchboard put me through to his office immediately and before i knew it, i was talking mano a mano to captain frank reed.

i explained that my class was going to be in newsday and we needed to interview a big star. he agreed immediately. we set the date - election day, when i was off from school - and the place - his office at NBC. i was all set.

almost 25 years later, i can still see the captain sitting across from me, eating an entire roast chicken with his hands while i asked him how he got started in radio, who named him "the captain", and what imus was like. it was a hell of an interview. the captain even took a call from kinky friedman while we chatted. 'kinky,' he told him proudly, 'i'd love to talk but i'm doing an interview for kidsday right now.'

little did he know that the only people who would learn anything from my probing questions were the lucky few to actually hear the cassette recording i made of our engaging discussion, which still exists somewhere in my parents' house - unlistened to for two decades.

i still kind of feel guilty for never telling the good captain that he was never going to be in print. for years, i pictured him running to his driveway every sunday morning, grabbing the paper, tearing out kidsday and breathlessly looking for the interview, only to trudge back to his home in resignation once he realized that this wasn't the week people would get to know the real captain frank reed.

here's to you captain...wherever you are.

if this was at all interesting to you, i can ask my folks to dig up photos of the big day. oh, and remind me to tell you about the time my next big celebrity get -

joey demaio of manowar -

made a man of me during my early days at WKWZ

(and thanks to whoever's in charge of http://imonthe.net/66wnbc/logos3.htm#reed - for sticking those photos up there. hope you don't me poaching them. remember, it was done with love.)

Considering The Way I Eat, I Would Have Bet It Would Have Been Gout Before This

what began yesterday afternoon with the throwaway IM comment i made to a buddy:

'my wiener feels weird today. and not in a good way'

has led to the vicodin prescription i just dropped off.

i've got a kidney stone.

right now, the pain is only moderately intense. i anticipate things will get worse before they get better.

and to think, as i fell asleep last night i honestly thought to myself, 'well, old man...a month into your blog and you've finally run out of things to write about that don't concern your kids' bathroom habits.'

i guess that counts as moderate irony.

i'll check in when i can.

aka Bubble Gum On Your Pants

thanks to the movie 'madagascar', the boys have taken a liking to the song 'i like to move it'. you know the one i'm talking about. relentless house beat...some guy repeating 'i like to move it move it! you like to move it move it!' over and over again.

take away the fact that i love watching them do their little spastic dance whenever i put it on for them, and the fact that i've never been a fan of that kind of dance music and i shouldn't have any problem with this song making it to heavy rotation at home, right?

wrong.

my past and present have collided.

'i like to move it' also happens to be a personal favorite of one of my good high school/college buddies - only whenever he would dance to it, more often than not, he was doing so with his scrotum pulled through his fly (aka 'hanging brains').

so now, much to my chagrin, whenever that song starts pumping and the boys start moving it moving it, i can't help thinking of my friend's balls.

A Man Whose Work Obviously Agrees With Him

POP QUIZ

this man is...

a) a retired jai-alai player

b) alex rodriguez's estranged father

c) the mayor of key west, florida

d) the chief executioner of singapore who tells everyone "i am going to send you to a better place than this. god bless you." right before he kills them

The Xochipiltecatls Must Be Very Proud

saw this tonight @ ruby's (the boys' favorite restaurant and the bane of my existance).

all i know is i hope that imelda is smart enough not to change her last name when she gets married. that handle is just too special to mess with.

And I Look Absolutely Terrible When I Do It, Too

to see me deliver an armload of shoes to billy bush in the middle of a big interview with jessica simpson...
access hollywood tonight.

The Roger Bannister Of Scoops

for some reason, the boys have come up with a name for the bubbles that are produced every time they pee in the toilet.

they call them 'scoops'.

this is how it works. they stand in front of the bowl, do their business, pause for a moment as they look at what they've done, judge it and make a proclamation.

as in "4 scoops!" or "2 scoops!" or if they've just woken up in the morning "8 scoops!" and then they flush.

they've each never broken the 12 scoop ceiling, which is why their minds were blown when it was determined i delivered 75 scoops the other day.

i am determined not to rest or stop drinking water until the i cross the 100 scoops barrier.

Mrs. B & I Are Registered There For Chanukah

wondering what to get the person you love for the holidays this year?

may i suggest you pay a visit to hollywoodiscalling.com?

the idea is simple. you pony up a few bucks and a big time hollywood celebrity calls anyone you want with one of dozens of prewritten messages from which you can choose.

like, for example, let's say your uncle is a big fan of the really fat guy from the sopranos who blew that guy at the construction site.

yeah, him. well for 20 bucks, he'll call your uncle and wish him a very merry christmas. and i'm willing to bet he'll drop some authentic goombah style flavor in the process.

or if your mailman has a crush on sybil danning...

...20 bucks and and this honest to goodness early 1980s sex bomb will come calling with a message of encouragement.

i've used the service myself and i can tell you first hand that nothing says friendship like a nice phone call from ron palillo.
