because i am basically a fidget - a husky, biggest-6th-grader-in-the-class-sized fidget - whenever i buy new clothes, if i want an age-appropriate extremity-to-trunk size ratio, i have to have every single garment i buy radically rebuilt.
you have no idea how important this is for a short short man.

since i moved to la, i lean on the sour-pussed russian magicians at melrose fashion design studio to elf-out my gear. it's a 45 minute or so drive from the suburboonies to their lair in west hollywood but i would drive much further to see their scowling, moled faces - and not only because they can turn a 34 inch inseam into something a wee man like myself can wear proudly.
they also have the most beautiful thread wall in the biz.

i went by the shop this evening to pick up a couple of pairs of frankenjeans, and when i asked if i could take a picture or two of the wall, marlena, the woman at the sewing machine looked at me like i was nuts.
"vy you vant take picture of vall?" she asked.
"the colors are beautiful," i told her with a grin. "they would look terrific in a photo. you don't know what you've got here!"
she took a step back, looked skeptically and crinkly-nosed at the dozens of spools of thread that have been hanging over her head for years and years and said, "you know...iss pretty."

and then we made out for 45 minutes.

I could insert joke here about playing her like strings on a violin, but it seems kind of........obvious.
That wall is beautiful, and I'll bet it's breathtaking in person.
